Jejungwon and Avison

Abstract
This paper examines Avison``s medical missionry activities centering on Jejungwon (The House of Universal Helpfullness). He served in Korea for approximately 42 years, from June 1893, when he arrived in Korea and assumed the responsibility of managing Jejungwon, [0 December -1935, when he left for the United States, Avison converted Jejungwon into a Christian missionary institution, and he constructed the Severance Hospital. Under the vision and belief that Koreans should take care of their own medical services later, he took the lead in earnest in education in Western medicine in Korea and developed the Severance Hospital into the Severance Union Medical School. AltJ10Ugh Avison``s service involved many difficulties after Japan occupied Korea by force, in addition to hospital services, he was deeply involved in higher education in Korea such as the operation of the medical education and Yunheui(Yeonhee) College. In the process, Avison operated the business based on ecumenism, which served him well in the process of raising funds to construc(Severance Hospital and in the process of cooperating with medical missionaries of other denominations when he \vas operating the Severance Hospital Medical School.
